TOP TIPS FOR DIY WEDDING FLOWERS

Planning to use DIY flowers for your wedding?
Here are some of our top tips!

Here are a few tips and suggestions if you are thinking about creating flowers for your wedding :

  1. Start to gather pictures of the types of flowers and styles you like - this will help when you talk to your florist and choose your flowers

  2. Think about the flowers that will be in season on your wedding day - they will be at their best and most plentiful if they are in season

  3. Keep it simple - the more flexible you can be, the more likely you are to find flowers to match your brief.

  4. Your flowers can be re-purposed during the day - one large urn of flowers can be very impressive and can be transported from your ceremony and re-used at your reception. Your bouquets can be placed in vases on tables at your reception, which not only looks beautiful but keeps them fresh!

  5. Plan the quantities and types of stems you will need - long stems for bouquets and urns - shorter stems for bud vases and table decorations.

  6. Start to collect bud vases, jars or vintage bottles for simple table decorations - which can be given away to guests afterwards

  7. What colours are you and your bridal party wearing - will your flowers match those colours?

  8. When visiting your venue, check if there are any particular colours that would work well. Is your venue rustic or more boutique hotel - a milk churn might not fit with every type of venue!

  9. Choose arrangements that don't require floral foam. Floral foam is a single use plastic which is very harmful to the environment.

  10. Make sure you allow time on the day before your wedding to prepare the flowers and transport them, if necessary, to your venue.

  11. Accept any offers of help to complete the preparation and installation of flowers! Whilst it's a fun thing to get together with trusted loved ones to create your flowers, it's good to be realistic about the many demands on your time close to your special day.

  12. Flowers will need to be kept in water for as long as possible in the heat of the Summer and in cool conditions, away from direct sunlight to maintain their beauty.

  13. Practise with some flowers well before the big day - doing a trial run will help you to plan the amount of time you may need and eliminate any nasty surprises!
